I think the best part about getting to know Sherrie Silver since finding out she choreographed the viral socially conscious This is America video by Childish Gambino for me, was heading straight to her website and being greeted by the most compelling and beautiful picture of her in her African element and seeing the words “Taking Afrodance to the World and taking the world to Africa.”
As a Rwandan-born dancer, one of Sherrie’s core mantra is being on a mission to educate the world about the African culture through the art of dance. Sherrie teaches, entertains and dances and it is now safe to say that the world is watching and listening to her attentively!
At the just concluded MTV Video Music Awards, Sherrie Silver walked away with her very own Best Choreographer Award for her work in Childish Gambino’s “This is America” Video. The very didactic and controversial video broke headlines and went viral for not just Sherrie’s amazing dance choreography alone but for its very strong message that addressed the recent killings of black men and women in America.
Along with her Best Choreographer Award, Sherrie received the Best Video with a message and Best Direction on behalf of Childish Gambino and his team who were not present at the awards. She later took to her social media to express her joy for how far her African dance is going and thanked her team for making it possible (Watch below).
